The Late-Night Taxi

A taxi that works after midnight collects people who do not want a record of where they were. Two adults, a moving city, and a driver who hears more than the fare pays for: that is the whole danger of the ride. Someone in the back seat is about to confess a destination they will deny in daylight. The city keeps its lights on. The confession does not. / The meter is still running when the truth arrives, and neither passenger can pretend the driver forgot the street. By morning the ride will have a price that is not on the receipt.
